Mon, Jul 16: Kyoto

Beautiful day, cloudy, but no rain.

More photos out of our room.

Beautiful door on a local building.

We took a bullet train to Kyoto.  A train came through the station without slowing down and it was fast.  Was gone before anyone could even think of taking a picture.  A lot of ooh's and awe's.  The picture is of the back end of the next train - they are fairly quiet and it is hard to hear them coming.

The castle we visited in Kyoto is the Nijo Castle, - the day before it did not rain and the morning was nice, so we did not take umbrellas.  When we came out of the tour of the building, it was pouring, and stayed that way the rest of the day.  We always brought our umbrellas after that.  This castle floor was constructed so it would "sing" like a nightingale when you walked on them, to protect against assassins.

Detail on the Castle

The castle gardens were very pretty...even in the rain.

The festival and float preview in Kyoto was very good - packed and colorful with lots of activities.

The floats were out and available for close up viewing...and the lanterns were lit on them.

A lot of women in kimonos,

and lots of food and craft booths, and games mostly for children - a carnival atmosphere.
